Bioretention basin liners

A bioretention basin liner is used in conjunction with a bioretention system. This system is a shallow depression utilised in an urban landscape and is designed to both collect and treat stormwater for alternative uses.

When stormwater is conveyed through a bioretention system it is then filtered and treated through a densely vegetated, biologically active sand and loam filter media.

The water then percolates through this filter media and all the pollutants are captured by fine filtration, adsorption and biological processing through both soil microbes and plants.

Once treated, the water is discharged to groundwater or it is conveyed via slotted or perforated pipes to downstream drainage systems. These systems can include anything from waterways to channels or pipes.

The bioretention system, in addition to removing pollutants, also helps to manage changes in the hydrology that occurs due to urbanisation.

For example, when a small amount of rainfall causes a runoff, the water is captured in the filter media surface (specifically in the extended detention zone). This then slowly percolates through the bioretention system’s filter media.

The bioretention systems’ delaying of the release of stormwater acts to mimic aspects of predevelopment hydrology, such as base flow regimes. This works to reduce pressures on urban streams. The volume of the runoff is also actively reduced through evapotranspiration or infiltration into the surrounding soil. The coarse sediment and litter carried by the stormwater is caught in the retention basin or sediment pond. The heavy sediment and litter falls to the bottom of the basin while the clearer water remains towards the top. Essentially, these structures work to intercept the stormwater before it flows through to the waterway.

Pond liners for bioretention application

Our versatile range of dam and pond liner fabrics — DURADAM/DURAPOND liners & Geotextile underlays — are the perfect solution for a number of applications. These include bioretention ponds and/or basins.

The DURADAM/DURAPOND liners are all made from high quality and puncture resistant materials. What does this mean for you? It means that they can also be used in applications where the prevention of contamination into or out of the pond or basin is important.

This variety of liners are also beneficial because they offer UV, chemical and rot resistance. Fabric Solutions Australia provides a range of geomembrane and geosynthetic offers that are not just excellent permanent barrier solutions but also cost-effective.

Bioretention systems often require a liner. The needs for a liner depends on the profile of the bioretention system drainage system as well as the specific conditions of the site or application. Liners come in both impermeable and permeable options.

Permeable Liners

Permeable liners are used to prevent in-situ soils from contaminating filter media or the underdrainage network.

Impermeable Liners

Impermeable liners ensure that water can’t be exchanged between the bioretention system and the surrounding soil.
